Capstones: Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts

As the culminating course of the BA in Studio Arts (BASA) degree, the Capstone Course enables students to apply their technical skills and critical knowledge in a self-directed and sustained process of art production that concludes in a public exhibition of a cohesive body of work. This work represents a synthesis of their interests, abilities, and learning in the program.

Congratulations to the BA in Studio Arts class of May 2020—an historical (and slightly unusual!) end to a degree if ever there was one. But these four did it. They moved their research and studio work home and managed to complete their capstones. Great work Jenny, Alyssa, Vecus, and Max! We hope you will enjoy looking at their work.

Capstone Project: Following Lines of (Ink)quiry

“As an artist, an observer, and a thinker, I am drawn to the intersection and layering of lines that surround us everywhere, creating shapes, angles, and texture. I am curious about the role lines play in creating patterns and sequences and how they can be used as a way to express information.”

Capstone Project: Hyperactive Self Expression

“I am 23, I am queer, I am an artist and a writer, and above all else I am scared. It is my goal to externalize these feelings, in order to make sense of them myself and allow others, feeling the same way, to see solidarity and gain some form of catharsis in the sharing”.

Capstone Project: Celluloid Highway

“The videos are hypnotic, droning, and meditative pieces intended to create a reality for the viewer that is separate from the banality of everyday life. Let these flickering images wash over you and become, for a time, the reality you have chosen to engage with.”

Vecus Mitchell
Capstone Project: The impulsive mind of a man with ADHD

“My Capstone Project is an audible, and visible expression of impulsivity. Each piece you are about to experience has stemmed from my creativity and ability to form a solid working piece using several different impulsive ideas.”

Words from Faculty

“It has been a delight to teach the capstone grads this semester. Their ingenuity, curiosity, and willingness to explore complex ideas has raised the bar for everyone.”
