Hike to Kildonnan Bay

We embarked on a nature walk of our own today, along Kildonnan beach and shore, where we were able to take in some spectacular views of Eigg and across to the mainland. Along the way, we saw a heron, several varieties of sea bird, and some seals out on a ledge near the shore as we made our way out to a rocky headland and then back out to the pier where we initially arrived on the island. At the end of the hike, some of the students took time to explore the beach further while others were quick to take advantage of their proximity to the local shop and pier. The local residents seemed unfazed by the recent power outage on the island; one might even say they appeared emboldened by the experience. One cannot help but wonder how the residents survive the harsh climate and conditions on Eigg during the winters, which is a topic Camille Dressler, the Director of the Isle of Eigg heritage trust, touches upon in her book about the island. According to Dressler, “in the harsh natural environment which was theirs, the people found comfort in legends and beliefs which helped them endure hardship with stoicism and conciliate unseen powers when life was precarious. These were an integral part of their culture….”
