In Remembrance of Professor Emeritus Dr. Robert Sargent Fay: A Friend, A Colleague, and A Mentor
With great sadness, Landmark College has learned that Professor Emeritus Dr. Robert Sargent Fay has passed away.
Dr. Fay received a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College and a Doctor of Education from Harvard University. He taught English and Humanities at Harvard University, Boston University, and in several public and private elementary and secondary schools before coming to Landmark College in 2001 as professor in the English department. In July 2011 he was named Professor Emeritus, and was the first faculty member to be distinguished with this title.
During his tenure at Landmark College, he was not only active in the classroom, but served as a member of the Faculty Senate and taught in the College’s summer program for High School students. Most recently, he served students by providing direct instruction and academic support in the Drake Center for Academic Support.
Landmark College President Dr. Peter Eden noted in an announcement to the campus that the community will "really miss Robert and the purity of his actions and accomplishments as an educator, artist and all-around terrific human being.” Likewise, the Landmark College Board of Trustees, through Board Chair Robert Lewis, passed on their condolences during this time, and expressed their sincere appreciation for everything that Professor Fay has done for the College and his students.
Robert was a talented and accomplished photographer, and often shared his love and talent for the art form with the College – most notably and recently in his exhibit celebrating the spirit of the people of Landmark College on the occasion of the College’s 25th anniversary, and in the book “Ocian in View! O! the Joy: A Collection of Photographs of the American West” published by Landmark College in honor of its 20th anniversary. His photographs can be best appreciated in terms of chronology and theme: Family and Friends, Nature, Classic Form, Mystery and Spirit, and the Artist. Since 1995, he has directed his interest in photography toward people and places associated with the arts.
Counseling services remains available to all members of the Landmark College community throughout the week. A brief, informal gathering will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. in the Library to allow for reflection and remembrance before the end of the semester. A more formal memorial experience is planned for the start of the fall semester at the College.
