Landmark College Students Study Chile’s Ecosystem
PUCON, CHILE — A dozen Landmark College students and two professors are spending January exploring the cultures and ecosystems, not of Putney, VT but of Pucon, Chile, at the entrance to the Trancura Valley in the shadow of the Andes, just fifty miles from the south Pacific Ocean.
“These types of short-term study abroad programs allow students to explore academic material in an extremely focused and novel format, one that works well for many Landmark College students,” said Peg Brigham Alden, Director of International Education and Professor of Social Sciences at Landmark College. “It balances some of our on-campus emphasis of self-knowledge and personal learning with a larger, global perspective.”
As part of Landmark College’s study abroad program, the three-week stay is designed to increase students’ knowledge of the relationship between people and the land they live on. In addition, the program enables students to experience working with local people and non-governmental organizations on community service projects.
Other components include visual journaling, reflection, collaborative learning, group dynamics, and problem-based education. An optional course, Instruction in Photography, gives students the opportunity to complete the photo-shooting requirement for photography courses.
