New Art Installation at the Click Family Sports Center
Landmark College has installed new artwork by well-known regional sculptor/installation artist Terry Marashlian of Northfield, Massachusetts, called “Players.” Created from stainless steel pyramids depicting four athletes in motion, “Players” provides a visual enhancement to the exterior of the College’s Click Family Sports Center.
Marashlian said his decision to create this Cubist-inspired series of figures in motion was sparked by a conversation with LC President Dr. Peter Eden, who was interested in acquiring a sculpture or mural representing athletics at Landmark College. Marashlian chose small stainless steel pyramids to construct each athletic figure, which together compose an abstract illustration of various sports offered at LC, including volleyball, basketball and soccer.
“One of my criteria when my work is complete is to ask, ‘Does it make me laugh or does it make me happy?’” Marashlian said. “This piece makes me smile when I think about the progression of the piece. It started as a discussion with no firm idea, and when we decided to place it on the Click Center, I drew the figures in a virtual reality program. It blows my mind to see it up on the building at different times of day and see things I hadn’t noticed before: the way it shimmers when the sun hits it earlier in the day, and shadows with jagged edges caused by the pyramids.”
Marashlian used over 900 stainless steel pieces, each one inscribed with a number, to meticulously assemble the pieces over a period of several months. “It’s an obsessive process,” he observed.
Another of Marashlian’s pieces, a kinetic sculpture called “Photon Translations,” has been installed on LC’s upper campus for several years. “Marashlian’s work, like all art, adds complexity to the environment,” President Eden said. “Yet it also is another way for us to literally present the reality that while LC is a specialty college, we are also a traditional college, with athletics, student activities, excitement, and much more.”
