Following Lines of (Ink)quiry

Artist Statement:

Imagine a maze: the systematic workings, the codification of patterns, and the foundation of complexities weaving and existing from simplistic lines—a construct with an embedded solution that invites others to engage with it. This is what drew me to drawing; I am an observer and a thinker. I am drawn to the intersection and layering of lines that surround us everywhere, creating shapes, angles, and texture. I am curious about the role lines play in creating patterns and sequences and how they can be used as a way to express information. I enjoy connecting with people and sparking conversation through the detail and fine lines I create. The instructional works of Sol LeWitt have a heavy influence on my process and my approach to the exploration of how patterns, based on conditional rules and instructional means, produce different and unique outcomes, forcing us to consider the juxtaposition of creativity and restraint within an established system. This push and pull becomes part of the dialogue between the artist and the audience, emphasizing how the visual patterns created by the instructions becomes just as important as the instructions itself. I want people to engage with my instructions with this in mind, that one line influences the next line and all other lines to follow, operating as a system with limits and bounds where there are also opportunities for creativity and complexity: a kind of dialogue as a metaphorical game of chess.
