Maximum Annual and Aggregate Loan Limits for Direct Subsidized and Direct Unsubsidized Loans

Students have annual as well as aggregate Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loan limits based on their year in school and dependency status (as determined by the FAFSA).

Annual limit based on year in school for Dependent Students (based on FAFSA definition)

  • First Year
    • 0-29 credits
    • $5,500
    • Combination of subsidized and/or unsubsidized based on eligibility.
    • No more than $3,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.
  • Second Year
    • 29-59 credits
    • $6,500
    • Combination of subsidized and/or unsubsidized based on eligibility.
    • No more than $4,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.
    • Junior and beyond
  • Third Year and beyond (baccalaureate candidates only)
    • 60-120 credits
    • $7,500
    • Combination of subsidized and/or unsubsidized based on eligibility.
    • No more than $5,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.

  • Combination of subsidized and unsubsidized.
  • No more than $23,000 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.

  • Combination of subsidized and unsubsidized.
  • No more than $23,000 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.
