Summer Institute 2019 Keynote: Dr. Brett Miller on neurobiology and learning disabilities
We were honored to have Dr. Brett Miller deliver the closing Keynote address at this year's Summer Institute for Educators
Dr. Miller is the program director of the Reading, Writing, and Related Learning Disabilities Program at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). This research program is focused on increasing knowledge on the development of typical and atypical reading and written language abilities, across the lifespan.
He has published numerous articles and co-edited journal and book volumes on literacy and learning disabilities. Before joining NICHD, he earned a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Haskins Laboratories.
Previously, he held the position of associate research scientist at the Institute of Education Sciences, in the U.S. Department of Education, where he oversaw research portfolios focused on topics related to math and science education, adult literacy, and learning and cognition and student learning.
Dr. Miller's presentation was titled, "Improving the Lives of All Learners: Progress in Learning Disabilities Research and Practice." In this excerpt he discusses recent advances in our understanding of the neurobiological foundations of reading difficulties.
